Description
The gates, gateposts, and railings to the English Baptist Church are a highly ornate pair of cast-iron gatepiers that date back to the 19th century. They feature double wrought-iron gates and elaborate cast iron railings on either side, set on low rubble stone walls with ashlar coping. The gatepiers have plinths and intricate openwork panels, with the upper panel showcasing a central roundel flanked by anthemion-type plant scrolls. Each pier is topped with neck rings beneath large leaf-scroll capitals, which are capped with ogee domes and acanthus finials.
The gates themselves consist of double outer rails adorned with finials and intricate wrought ironwork in between, including a quatrefoil above a twisted rail. The center section features a lower top-rail with nail-head finials, wrought iron scrolls beneath the top rail, and spearheads on the dog bars. The outer rails are made of cast iron, with knob-ended rails at both ends, and are accented by top and bottom bands of small ovals. The top cresting is decorated with thick fleur-de-lys and additional nail-head finials.
