Description
Oak House is an end-terrace house built from colourwashed rubble stone, featuring a slate gabled roof with a stuccoed low parapet that is raised at the ends and center, along with painted stucco end stacks. The house has two storeys and a four-window range that is offset to the right. There are two 20th-century rooflights near the eaves. The windows are renewed 12-pane sashes, and the doorway in the second bay has a painted timber 20th-century doorcase with pilasters and a plain hood on consoles, leading to a 20th-century door. The house also has a raised stucco plinth.
The right gable end includes a 9-pane sash window in the attic on the left, two small 16-pane sashes on the first floor at slightly different levels, and a small 4-pane casement on the ground floor to the right. At the rear, there is a wing with continuous stonework and a roughcast end stack, along with a rear stair-tower that has a hipped roof and a large 18-pane stairlight. To the right is an outshut with a renewed door and a 9-pane window below, and a 12-pane sash above to the right. To the left, there is a two-storey, two-window rear wing with renewed sashes. In 1981, the house was stuccoed and received a sill band.
The property has been altered during its conversion to flats. The hall features late 19th-century encaustic tiles, and all doors have been replaced. Inside, there is a closed string 18th-century staircase with turned column balusters, plain square newels, and a thick moulded handrail, consisting of four flights to the attic. There was a panelled room with fielded panelling, a panelled door alcove, and a moulded cornice, as well as some reeded ceiling cornices, although these were not seen during inspection. Two pegged oak roof trusses are exposed over the stair, with reports of additional trusses in the main roof.
