Description

Pen-y-graig Independent Chapel is a chapel that features roughcast walls with some stucco and a hipped slate roof, all of which were renewed in the 20th century. The front of the chapel is two-storey and includes two arched windows with a plaque above, and two cambered-headed doors below. The windows have plastic glazing, and the doors are also modern. There is a 20th-century band between the floors, along with surrounds for the doors and window heads. The side walls each have one arched window per floor, and the rear wall has two arched windows, all with 20th-century plastic glazing.

Inside, the chapel has a pulpit on the rear wall and a square interior layout. There is a three-sided gallery supported by two iron columns, each with curious square heads. The gallery front is finely detailed with a modillion cornice beneath large vertical panels that are dark grained, and the angles are curved. The pews are painted and arranged in three blocks, featuring shaped bench ends and low doors. The outer blocks are raked and face inward, while the gallery pews are similar in design and also raked, but without doors. There is a set fawr pew and a small later 19th-century pulpit with canted angles, open panels with balustrading, and a front panel that includes a roundel. The base of the pulpit is panelled, and there are similar turned balusters on the stairs on each side. The ceiling is painted and boarded, featuring diagonal ribs.
