Description

9 Quay Street is a three-storey and attic terraced house, likely dating to the 18th century. It is built of painted stucco with a steep slate roof, the ridge and eaves being lower than number 8 but higher than number 10. The building features a 20th-century modillion gutter cornice and renewed red brick and stuccoed stacks. It has a four-window front with plate glass sash windows, with two small 20th-century dormers set into the roof; the upper floor windows are shorter than those on the two main floors. The doorway, originally in the third bay from the left, is now to the right and features two cemented steps, a 20th-century doorcase with a moulded architrave, brackets, a dentil cornice, and a six-panel door with a plain overlight. A rainwater head is located in the centre of the front.

The ground floor has been altered. Inside, a fine, later 18th-century staircase rises over three flights, featuring ornate scrolled treads, a moulded rail, fluted column newels, and vase balusters (two to each tread). A ramped handrail completes the staircase at the top landing.
