Description

Hill House, also known as Chestnut Tree Lodge, is a late 18th-century, three-storey house featuring three windows. It has a later continuous lateral outshot at the rear. The exterior is finished with colour-washed plaster over rubble and topped with a steeply pitched slate roof that has plain eaves. There are rendered stacks and water tabling, with slate-hung gable ends.

The second-floor windows are Victorian sashes with a continuous sill band, while the ground floor has modern six-light shop windows with oversized nameboards. The former central doorway has been partly modernised with a 19th-century gabled portico, supported by cast iron columns, with half columns flanking the entrance, which has been blocked to create a window.

Access to the building at the time of inspection was via the adjoining Emporium on the right. The forecourt features modern brick steps and is flanked by a 19th-century colour-washed wall that includes attractive 19th-century ironwork railings. At the rear, there are sash windows in the lofted outshot, consisting of six small panes over two long panes.
