Description

Y Felin is an early 19th century flour mill that was raised and altered later in the 19th century, though it may include some earlier stonework. The building is constructed of rubble stone and features a slate roof, standing two storeys high with a loft. There is a continuous roof over a lean-to on the north side. The gables show signs of having been raised, likely during the later 19th century.

The west gable has an off-centre stable door with painted stone voussoirs. To the left of this door, the lean-to has a similar ground floor door. The first floor features another similar door with a timber lintel, accessed by six slate steps from a terrace in front of the Mill House. The loft contains a pair of later 19th century casement windows with a brick surround and a cambered head, and there are five tiers of blocked dove holes above. The south wall of the mill faces a mill-pond and is blank.

At the rear, there is a 16-foot overshot water-wheel, with its iron rim relocated from Felin Isaf (Dewiston Mill) in St Davids. The rear wall has a first-floor window with a single slab lintel at the centre and a small opening to the left, above a trough. The loft also has a brick-framed casement pair similar to those at the front. The lean-to has a straight joint indicating it was added after the gable was raised, featuring one first-floor window with a brick head, while the north side has a window and door on the ground floor with timber lintels.

The mill retains a complete set of working machinery, all intact since restoration, with pine floor joists and beams. The loft roof includes some reused collar beams, and most window lintels appear to be reused as well. The lean-to contains a kiln and malting floor, and the machinery is said to date from 1819.
