Description

The Cornstore is a three-storey warehouse built with squared grey limestone of irregular size, featuring a nogged brick eaves cornice and a renewed slate roof. The south front elevation consists of five bays with openings that have brick heads and stone keystones, with the smallest openings located on the top floor. The glazing is modern, and the slate sills have been renewed. The centre window on the first floor is slightly taller, indicating it was once a loading door. The ground floor features a central broad segmental-arched doorway with large tooled stone voussoirs and modern double doors. A window on the right has been blocked and replaced by a similar window positioned slightly further right.

The east end wall, facing the road, has a window to the left of centre and a loading doorway to the right on both upper floors. The ground floor includes a doorway to the left and a short wide door to the right, which aligns with the loading doors above. The left end wall has two windows on the upper floor and two on the first floor, with the left window being shorter. There are marks of various blocked openings, indicating an added outbuilding at this end. The ground floor has a 20th-century broad door to the right.

The rear elevation also has five bays and is similar in style, but lacks keystones above the brick heads. There is a low blocked centre door with a brick head.

Inside, the ground floor ceiling features heavy square close-set beams, while the first floor has close-set heavy joists. Modern stairs are located in the centre, with a sack hoist above that includes a wheel dated 1769. The roof is supported by about ten heavy pegged collar trusses, with the sack-hoist truss featuring a tie-beam below and strutting in the apex.
