Description
The churchyard of the Church of Saint Mary features rubble stone walls on the north, east, and west sides. To the east, a rubble wall extends from just east of the church's east wall nearly to the edge of the steep northern drop to the Mill Pond. This wall is approximately 1.8 meters high and serves as a retaining wall, which is visible from outside. There is one blocked doorway in the wall and remnants of a demolished structure on the retaining wall. A low rubble wall runs along the top of the very high northern retaining wall from the Mill Pond, which curves around behind No 1 Town Quay and the houses on the east side of Northgate Street, ending at the rear corner of Nos 2-4 Northgate Street. The northern face adjacent to the Mill Pond is largely built over bedrock at the northeast corner.
