Description

The Royal George is a three-storey inn built with painted stucco and features a slate close-eaved roof with painted rendered end stacks. Its plain three-bay front faces the Quay and has a slate gabled roof with cement rendered flanking stacks. The building has a plinth, window openings with plain reveals, 16-pane sash windows on the lower floors, and narrower 12-pane sash windows on the second floor. The central doorcase was altered in the 1980s and features engaged Roman Doric columns that appear to be original, although the box top has replaced a modillion cornice. The door has panelled reveals, a 20th-century door, and an overlight with thin rectangular panes. The left end gable has overhanging verges.

At the rear, there is a two-storey wing facing Northgate Street that is double-fronted. It includes two renewed square-headed 19th-century two-light shop windows with shaped heads flanking a 20th-century door with a blocked overlight, and two renewed 4-pane sash windows above.

The ground floor has undergone significant alterations. The six-panel doors in the entrance hall have been removed. The staircase behind the front room features damaged wooden balustrades in a Chinese Chippendale style, with the lower section possibly boxed in. The upper flight of the staircase has a diagonally crossed pattern between the uprights.
