Description
2 and 4 Northgate Street is a café with a house, featuring painted roughcast and slate gabled roofs. The building is two storeys high and dates from the late 19th century, showcasing a front elevation of three bays with an overhanging roof. On the first floor, there are two 4-pane horned sash windows and a 2-4-2-pane timber oriel window to the right. The ground floor has been altered since 1981, now displaying three-light shop windows on either side and a 4-pane window to the right of the central door. In 1981, the left shop window was a sash window, and the window to the right of the door was another door. A 20th-century glazed door has replaced one of the original six-panel doors. The left end features a first-floor 4-pane sash window, while both ends have one 20th-century ground floor 4-pane window. There is a lean-to structure at the rear.
The earlier rear section is L-shaped, extending from the southeast with taller roofs made of imitation slate. The southern range consists of two parts: the first has a short gabled roof, and the second features a small brick stack at the eastern end and higher eaves. The eastern return range runs north in two parts as well. The northern elevation of the southern range was not accessible in 2004; however, in 1981, it had a sash window to the right and, to the left, a doorcase with an entablature supported by modillions and barley-sugar twisted columns, along with a later 19th-century inset gabled wood porch. The door consisted of six panels, with the center two being glazed, and there were sash windows three panes wide. The higher section to the left had a canted bay window on the ground floor and a sash window on the first floor.
The return eastern range has a western front divided into two parts. The larger left section, which had been a lofted stable, has undergone external alterations. The recessed narrow right section features two renewed 4-pane windows on each floor. The left part has two ground floor windows, a door, and two upper windows, all of which have been renewed.
The interior was not available for inspection in 2004. In 1981, the earlier section contained a contemporary steep staircase that divided into two, along with six-panel doors and panelled shutters.
