Description
The gates and railings at the southwest and the south and west sides of the churchyard of St Mary are notable features. They include two Gothic stone gatepiers located at the northwest angle, along with two lengths of iron railings set on a concrete plinth and rubble lower walls. One length of railing extends east to the corner of No 2 Main Street, while the other runs north to the gate at the corner of Nos 2-4 Northgate Street.
The gates are characterized by massive stone piers made of grey limestone, which feature a plinth, a square chamfered shaft, a machicolated cornice, and a heavy cross-gabled cap adorned with trefoil panels in the gables and roll-moulds on top. The double gates are designed with large fleur-de-lys outer finials, smaller fleur-de-lys finials on the main uprights, and dog-bars. The gates also have double mid-rails and top rails that ramp up to the inner upright. The railings are similar in style, featuring larger fleur-de-lys finials on the stanchions.
