Description
Pembroke House is a three-storey, three-window-wide terraced house dating from the late 18th century. It is taller than the adjacent property to the east (No. 17) and the Town Hall to the west, which is set back. The front is faced with painted stucco, designed to resemble ashlar, and has a close-eaved slate roof and end stacks, with brick on the left side and rendered on the right. The upper floors retain three four-pane hornless sash windows to the top floor and one longer window to the centre of the first floor, the latter with an incised keystone and voussoirs, and painted slate sills. The outer windows on the first floor have been replaced by later 19th-century square oriels with moulded cornices, angle pilasters, and two-four-two-pane sashes. The ground floor has been altered in the late 20th century. The original doorway is on the right side of the front, and is not aligned with the rest of the facade, featuring a hardwood three-panel door and overlight. A late 20th-century shopfront occupies the two wide bays on the ground floor, with the entrance recessed into the right bay. A thin dentil cornice runs over the shopfront and is continued over the original house doorway. The right end wall is rendered. The rear elevation has a scattered arrangement of windows, primarily from the 20th century, along with flat-roofed, single-storey additions. The ground floor has been altered; the upper floors were not inspected.
