Description
Hendre Cross is a 19th-century building constructed from coursed squared grey stone, featuring grey limestone quoins and purple Caerbwdy stone dressings. It has an L-plan layout, comprising a large single-storey schoolroom with a mezzanine floor and staircase, and a two-storey house in the southern cross-wing. The schoolroom includes a grey limestone plinth and quoins, with purple stone moulded shoulders on the gable, a coped gable, and a small stack at the north end. The north wall has a modern 20th-century bow window that disrupts the original character, providing light to the gallery space.
On the west side, there is a three-light painted stone mullion-and-transom window with Tudor-arched heads for the lower lights and small-pane glazing in the centre top light, all framed by a chamfered surround in purple stone. To the right of this window is a projecting porch with a bellcote. The north side features a ledged door with a cambered head in a purple stone surround. The west gable is coped with purple stone shoulders and includes a gabled bellcote, which is supported by slightly raised walling on corbels above a ground floor two-light Tudor stone-mullion window. Above the bellcote shaft, there is a very small window. To the right, there is a 20th-century glazed lean-to that connects to the domestic range, which runs west and has coped east and west gables, along with a west end stack. There is also a similar two-light Tudor window on the ground floor.
