Description

This large terraced house and shop, known as Hylton John Boys Shop, is constructed of painted stucco and features a close-eaved slate roof with flanking stacks. The building stands three storeys tall and has a three-window range of large 16-pane sash windows on the upper floors. The ground floor has a continuous late 20th-century shop front that includes four panelled piers, a deep fascia, and a cornice.

In 1974, the two right-hand bays contained remnants of a 19th-century shop front, which featured a fine doorway on the left and a casing on the right, both flanked by pilasters with fascia and moulded cornices. The left door had six flush panels, with the upper four panels adorned with roundels in the corners. The reveals were also flush panelled. The left bay included a small plate glass shop window and a panelled doorway.

The ground floor underwent complete alterations in 1986, while the upper floors became inaccessible in 2005, with the window glass on the first floor painted over. In 1984, the central doorway led to a hall or corridor that passed under a pilastered archway to a rear dog-leg stair, which had a plain rail, square balusters, and carved tread ends. This original staircase appears to have been removed, leaving a boxed-in staircase leading to a modern store-room on the left side.

On the upper floors, there was ornamental plasterwork on the cornices and friezes in the landings, corridors, and principal rooms, along with a ceiling rose over the stairwell. The corridors featured depressed arches with reeded pilasters, six-panel doors in moulded architraves, reeded chimney pieces, and panelled shutters.
