Description

Haverfordwest Castle consists of the ruins of a castle built from rubble stone. The main surviving section is the inner ward located at the eastern end of the castle hill, which is enclosed on three sides by medieval structures. The fourth side is partly open and partly occupied by the Governor's House, which dates from 1780 and originally contained the inner gate.

The remaining high curtain wall features a southwest tower situated south of the Governor's House, along with the south wall of the former hall that has two large pointed first-floor windows dating from around 1290. This wall was raised on an undercroft that is illuminated by five lancet windows. The tower has chambers on three levels. At the southeast corner was the former chapel, which includes a square tower facing east and large windows to the east and south, with the eastern window rebuilt using brick and featuring a pointed head.

The eastern range ends with the very thick walls of a late 12th-century northeast tower. This tower had two chambers on the first floor; the southern chamber had three large late 13th-century windows that are now blocked, along with undercroft windows below. The northern chamber features cruder windows with stone voussoirs, including three windows, two of which are paired. The outer walls of the northeast tower remain intact and are very thick, with fireplaces located in the northern wall.

A short corbelled wall-passage extends west to the Brechinock Tower, with a stub of wall running southeast towards the former inner gate. The curtain wall is partially preserved along the northern side, extending west from the Brechinock Tower in a curve that overlooks Hayguard Lane. The bases of a mural tower can be seen north of the former Gaol, along with a square tower located north of the car park.
