Description
This pair of limekilns, likely built in the early 19th century, is located on the Eastern Quay. One kiln is circular and intact, while the other is square and partially demolished; both were restored around 1975. Each kiln stands approximately 3 meters high and is connected by a rubble-faced ramp leading up from the north. The northern kiln features a parapet and Dewisland-type tapering kiln-eyes, while the southern kiln has a surviving kiln-eye on its north side, with a crucible exposed due to the collapse of its front and south side. There is a rubble wall between the kilns, with steep steps leading up. Although the exact date of construction is uncertain, records indicate that lime for burning was imported as early as 1743. By 1870, the four kilns at Porthclais were owned by C Allen, but they were disused by 1906.
