Description
1 Pier Hill is a house that has been divided into holiday flats. It features painted stucco with slate roofs that have close eaves. The building has two storeys and is divided into two sections, with the upper part apparently rebuilt in the mid-20th century. The taller section, which is downhill, has stuccoed end stacks, with the left stack positioned forward of the ridge. On the left side, there are broad 20th-century 4-pane sash windows on each floor, both of which have been widened compared to old photographs. There is a tiny window under the eaves in the centre and another 4-pane sash window on the first floor to the right. A 20th-century door is located on the ground floor extreme left, with a small 4-pane window to the right of centre.
The uphill section is smaller, featuring a roof with a much lower pitch and a wedge shape in plan. The former doorway on the left has been converted into a 4-pane sash window, while a low late 20th-century window has been inserted to the right on both floors. The narrow end gable has rounded angles, with the curves stopping just below the eaves height. The rear of the building facing Castle Square is windowless and steps forward from the main part, with steps leading up to a door (to Herring Gull Cottage) located in the right return.
The rear of the main part displays thickly rendered irregular corbelling under the eaves, with a rounded angle to the left featuring a corbel and a 4-pane sash window to the right.
