Description

The Former Assembly Rooms, now converted into three flats, features an assembly room located on the upper floor above two lower storeys. The building is finished in white-painted roughcast and has a slate hipped recessed roof. At the northwest end, there is a full-height large rounded bay that overlooks the pier. The main block and the bow are connected by a stepped rebated angle. Surrounding the building is a corbelled embattled limestone parapet, which has paired embattled bridged chimneys above the bow.

On the top floor, there are large arched sash windows with Gothic glazing bars, with two widely spaced on the southwest elevation facing Pier Hill, three in the curved northwest end, and three on the northeast elevation facing the sea. The northeast elevation has two windows spaced to the left that are likely original, while a shorter window with different glazing to the right is probably an insertion. The first floor features small horizontally sliding sashes with small panes, including three on the southwest side with a 20th-century stable door (leading to The Cabin) between the first and second flats, which is accessible via an external timber stair. There are also two windows in the curved bay and one to the left on the northeast side, which has two small windows to the right.

The ground floor facing Pier Hill includes a broad vehicular entry to the Caldey Island stores, a casement window in the third bay that is partly obscured by stuccoed steps leading up to the timber stairs, and to the right of the steps, a 20th-century window that replaces a pair of casement windows in the fourth bay, along with a half-glazed door (leading to Lower Deck) at the extreme right.
