Description
The Close Wall, formerly listed with Porth Y Twr, is a medieval surrounding wall for The Cathedral Close. It was noted as ruinous and in need of repair in 1379 and extends for about 1000 meters around the Close. Only a small section remains at full height, with the most impressive part being the stretch that runs from the lane west of the Deanery to Pont Cerwen Dewi. A substantial section also runs north from Porth y Twr. On the north side, the wall crosses the river Alun via a rough segmental masonry arch.
There were originally four gates into The Close, with Porth y Twr being the only one that still exists. The sites of the other gates include Porth Padrig, located by the lane west of the Deanery, Porth Gwyn, which was northwest of The Archdeaconry, and Porth Boning, adjacent to The Canonry. It is believed that a wall surrounding the cathedral enclosures existed as early as 1172.
