Description
The churchyard surrounding St. David's Cathedral features a large graveyard that slopes down from the south towards the cathedral. It is bordered on the south by a retaining wall to The Pebbles, on the west by a wall along the roadway from the Deanery coach-house to the River Alun and continuing along the river to Pen-y-Ffos bridge, on the east by the Close Wall, and on the north by a garden wall south of Cloister Hall and a similar field wall to the east.
The graveyard has a steep slope starting from a high point by Porth y Twr, with main entrances from the 39 Steps and the Deanery Gate. The area is mostly covered in mown grass, except for a rough triangular plot at the southwest corner. There are numerous memorials, primarily headstones from the 19th century, particularly on the terrace below The Pebbles. While none of these memorials are of outstanding individual merit, they collectively enhance the setting of the cathedral. Notable headstones include one for H Harries of Treginnis Isaf (died 1850) featuring an Egyptian winged orb in the cornice at the west end of the terrace, along with headstones for T Rees of Rhosson (died 1818), Henry James of Rhosson (died 1838), Ann Rees of Rhosson (died 1851), and John Warlow of Llandigige Fach (died 1816). Additionally, south of the south transept, there is a railed enclosure containing a later 19th-century memorial for the Williams family of Hendre.
