Description
The retaining wall on the southeast side of the River Alun, extending from the ford to the bridge by Cloister Hall, is a long structure made of rubble stone. It runs along the canalised section of the river, situated behind the cathedral buildings. The wall stretches from the ford past the footbridge by Pen-y-ffos to the northwest angle of Cathedral Hall. It features a plain design with a flat coping.
Beyond Cathedral Hall, there is a higher garden wall, followed by the western end of the undercroft of the former St Mary's College, which has a high rubble wall. This is succeeded by a low retaining wall leading up to a bridge that carries the derelict remains of an early 20th-century structure associated with Cathedral Yard. At the back of Cloister Hall yard, there is a short length of iron railings.
Throughout the wall, there are various culvert outlets, some of which are linked to Sir George Gilbert Scott's restoration work from the 1860s, while others may be of ancient origin.
