Description

This is a row of four rubble stone limekilns located on the south side of the estuary. They were restored between 1981 and 1982 and are built into the bank above the high water line. Each kiln is roughly circular and features Dewisland type kiln-eyes with sloping heads leading up to a short stone lintel. The circular crucibles are mostly filled in, except for the further kiln, which has been restored most completely; the others have been repointed and stabilized. Between the third and fourth kilns, the foundations of a small watchman’s hut are exposed. The first kiln, which is the nearest, is the most roughly built and was added later, as only three kilns along with the watchman’s hut are depicted in a watercolour from 1795. However, four kilns are shown on a plan from 1839.
