Description

This is a row of four rubble stone limekilns located on the south side of the estuary, restored between 1981 and 1982. They are built into the bank above the high water line and are roughly circular in shape, featuring Dewisland type kiln-eyes with sloping heads leading up to short stone lintels. The circular crucibles are mostly filled in, except for the further kiln, which has been fully restored, while the others have been repointed and stabilized. Between the third and fourth kilns, the foundations of a small watchman’s hut are exposed. The first kiln, which is the nearest, is the most roughly built and was added later, as only three kilns along with the watchman’s hut are depicted in a watercolour from 1795. However, an 1839 plan shows all four kilns.
