Description
Cartlett House is a farmhouse from the late 18th century or early 19th century that was later extended in the 19th century to resemble a small gentry house. It has two stories and an attic, with the older range on the left featuring a thickly grouted slate roof and rendered end stacks, the larger stack being on the left. The unpainted rendered facade displays three small 12-pane sash windows above, and below it is a broad cemented gabled porch with an entry on the left side. To the right, there is a later 19th-century slate-roofed canted bay and another 12-pane sash window to the left. The porch contains a flush-panelled door.
Inside, there is a central passage and staircase, with a very large timber-lintel fireplace in the left room that includes a bread oven and a rounded slate-topped seat projecting from the right pier. The interior also features bead moulded joists and plank doors.
The added range on the right has an unpainted rendered facade with a formal two-window front under a hipped grouted slate roof, complemented by a large stack on the east side. The 12-pane sash windows have raised cement surrounds and quoins. There are two windows above and one below, positioned to the right of a 6-panel door with a traceried overlight, all set within a glazed gabled timber porch on a rendered base. The east end wall is made of rubble stone, and the room to the right of the entry has a plain cornice and a marble fireplace.
The front garden of the right range features low rubble walls, with one wall dividing the two ranges and another along the roadside. The dividing wall includes a mounting block on the west side. The roadside wall has a carriage entry with squared stone piers, stepped slate caps, and an iron gate.
