Description
St Mary’s House is a house dating from the 18th century. It is constructed with a painted roughcast front, rising to four storeys and two bays wide. The roof is hipped and covered in slate, with red brick side stacks. The upper floors have twelve-pane sash windows. On the first floor, a twelve-pane sash window is set slightly further to the left than the windows above, positioned over an arched doorway. A large, two-storey canted bay window is situated on the right-hand side, featuring four-over-sixteen-over-four-pane glazing. A six-panelled door is accompanied by a radiating-bar fanlight and is accessed via three steps with wrought iron rails. The north end wall is clad in slate, while the south end is roughcast.
Inside, the staircase features a 19th-century bulbous newel post, a thin rail, and a closed string. A thin cornice is present in the front room, and an elliptical arched recess can be seen. In the rear room, a rubble stone elliptical arch on the south wall is believed to be the remains of the former kitchen fireplace.
