Description

Green Grove is a house featuring a striking panelled stucco façade that was faithfully restored around 1980, although this façade is not original to the building. Inside, there are indications of three front attic windows that were blocked up during the stucco work.

At the rear, there is a catslide roof that extends the main roof slope over the back of the house, which is also not original, as there are at least two disused rear attic windows beneath it. The stairs turret situated in the middle of the catslide roof dates from around 1900.

The porch, supported by cast-iron columns, is also from around 1900, as are the front railings, which have been recently restored on a rebuilt low wall. The previous owner, Mr. Jenkins, had interests in a foundry at Dowlais.

The stuccoed façade is characterized by rectangular panels defined by a large, simplified version of a bolection moulding. It has a plinth at the base and rusticated strips at the corners. The elevation consists of two storeys plus a windowless attic. The windows feature hornless six-pane sashes with old glass and stone sills.

The front door is a six-panel design with the lowest pair being flush. These panels are edged with early 19th-century reeded detailing, and there are false voussoirs of stucco above, typical of the 18th century. The slate roof has a tile ridge, rendered end-chimneys, and gable copings on moulded knees.
