Description

No 2 Lansdowne Cottages is part of a terrace of five small houses built in a formal design along a curve. Each house has a flat front, but No 2 and the entrance bay to Nos 4 and 5 project slightly. The street elevations are finished in painted stucco and consist of two bays per cottage, with two storeys plus a basement. Features include a deep first-floor sill band, a moulded cornice with small modillion brackets, and a heavy panelled parapet with a moulded top. The two projecting sections have an additional blocking course over the top cornice. The roofs are covered with 20th-century concrete tiles.

The houses have sixteen-pane hornless sash windows and flat-headed doorways with late 20th-century six-panel doors and overlights. The rear of the property features a 12-pane sash window on the first floor and a small four-pane dormer above, along with various ground floor lean-to additions.

No 2 projects slightly forward and has a blocking course over the top cornice. It includes one central sash window above a small shop front, which has a painted timber surround with a three-light shop window, where the third pane is canted into a recessed doorway to the left. There is a half-glazed panel door with a plain rectangular overlight. An iron grate at the base of the wall and a manhole cover to the right of the doorway indicate the presence of a basement.

Inside, the front and back rooms are arranged with stairs at right angles between them. The staircase features stick balusters, a ramped rail, and thin bulbous turned newels, with four flights leading down to the basement, which is accessed by slate steps.
