Description

No 1 Rock Houses is an end-terrace house that forms part of a pair with No 2, designed in a unified style. The front is painted stucco and features three storeys and a basement, with two bays separated by three Ionic pilasters. These pilasters rise from a band above the ground floor and support a heavily moulded entablature that includes a pulvinated frieze, cornice, and parapet. Each house has a one-window range and an inner doorway, with 12-pane hornless sash windows. The ground floor windows do not align with those on the upper floors.

A broad flight of three stone steps leads up to paired central Ionic doorcases, which have recessed six-panel doors with overlights. There are cast-iron boot scrapers set into the stone. The basement steps are slate, and No 1 has a 20th-century horned nine-paned sash window and a 20th-century door located beneath a bridge to the front door.

The right end wall of No 1 is slate-hung and features four-paned horned sashes aligned on the first and second floors to the left, as well as a very tall stair window with 32 panes, which is two panes wide. This window is partly obscured by a first-floor link to No 4 Rock Terrace, which is also slate-hung.

The area railings are similar to those found in front of Lexden Terrace, flanking the steps with gates at the outer ends leading to the basement steps. The rear seaward side is also slate-hung and includes a parapet, two two-storey canted bay windows with 2-4-2-pane sashes, and two pairs of four-pane sashes on the second floor. There are also two dormers located behind the parapet.
