Description

Slate House is a Grade II listed building that serves as both commercial premises and accommodation. It consists of two ranges: a four-storey main section on the left and a two-storey range on the right. The main part features white-painted stucco and a slate roof with brick end stacks. It has a three-window facade topped with a parapet supported by small modillions. The windows are horned sash types, with four panes on the upper floor and plate glass on the first and second floors, arranged in pairs in the outer bays. The first-floor windows are framed in moulded stucco.

On the ground floor, there are two later 19th-century shop windows flanking a central square-headed doorway. These shop windows have timber surrounds with cornices resting on elaborately carved brackets, which are actually the capitals of removed turned columns. A 20th-century half-glazed door with an overlight is located here. The left end wall facing Sergeants Lane is unpainted and features a similar shop window to the right, but with two panes and capitals above turned columns. A cast-iron street name plaque for Sergeant's Lane is set high on the right.

The two-storey section on the right is a single bay, finished in painted render, with a plain parapet. It has a first-floor triple plate-glass sash window and a full-width shop front with similar capitals to the cornice. The recessed half-glazed door with an overlight is positioned to the left, with three panes to the right, the inner one being canted.

At the rear, there is a rendered four-storey, three-bay wing facing Sergeant's Lane, which also has a parapet. It features two two-pane stair windows set lower in the right bay above a lean-to porch. The left and center bays contain two four-pane sashes on the third floor, two twelve-pane sashes on the second floor, a twelve-pane sash and a pair of narrow sashes on the first floor, and a plate glass sash and door on the ground floor.

The rear is rendered and has an L-shaped plan, with a rubble stone two-storey lean-to in the angle that includes a sixteen-pane sash on the first floor above a glazed door. There is also some slate-hanging on the east side wall, which may be part of an older structure that has been incorporated into the building.
