Description

The Railed Monument located east of St Tyfriog's Church is a large L-shaped enclosure featuring high cast iron rails topped with spike finials and corner posts adorned with trophy finials. The gateway on the south side has an elaborately scrolled wrought iron over-arch, with short flanking sections of rails filled with scrollwork, each ending in a triplet of trophy finials.

Within the enclosure is a Gothic style headstone dating from around 1900. It has a crocketted gable with a leafy finial, and carved leafwork at the bases of the gable and colonettes. The headstone is signed at the base: "D.T. Llandyssil".

The inscription commemorates David Morris and his wife Ann, along with their children, listing their names and dates of death. The inscription reads: "Coffadwriarth am David Morris Cwrrs ac Ann ei wrag ag wyth ou plant buont feirw fel y canlyn". The names and dates are as follows:

  • David Morris, March 15, 1862, aged 80
  • Ann Morris, August 29, 1833, aged 48
  • Ebenezer, March 9, 1822, aged 9
  • Ann, May 26, 1830, aged 9
  • Evan Chwer, March 3, 1833, aged 18

  • John, March 2, 1867, aged 40

Additionally, it commemorates Eleanor Morris, their daughter, who died on September 25, 1900, aged 87. The inscription concludes with a warning: "Am hynny byddwch chwithau barod ganys yn yr awr ni thybioch y claw mab y dyn".
