Description

Capel Mair, Chapel House and Vestry, located in Feidrfair, is a 19th-century chapel featuring a rock-faced blue lias pedimental front adorned with stucco dressings and arch-headed windows. The façade includes long paired windows on each side and a triplet in the center, all with pilaster jambs, moulded heads, and keystones. The center window of the triplet is wider than the others. A sill band under the side windows is interrupted by a stucco doorcase, which is arched and has an arched hood supported by panelled pedestals with concave square finials. The entrance features paired arch-headed doors and a crescent overlight. The chapel has a banded slate roof, two-storey coursed rubble side walls, and four windows, with the upper ones being arched.

The forecourt is enclosed by cast-iron railings with an intersecting oval pattern. Adjoining the chapel is a two-storey house with three windows, which is stuccoed and has cambered headed openings and a centre bargeboard gable. This house has a slate roof and brick end stacks, with a vestry and Sunday School located behind it.

Inside, there is a three-sided gallery supported by painted fluted cast-iron columns, featuring curved angles and a front with panelled piers and painted pierced cast-iron panels, which were added in 1905 and are echoed in the surround to the set fawr. The ornate panelled timber pulpit has a curving stair on each side and a canted front. Behind the pulpit is a broad tall organ arch with a console keystone and hoodmould. The organ, created by Blackett and Howden of Newcastle upon Tyne, has a recessed keyboard under the arch and Gothic detailing on its case. The ceiling is plain with flat boards and a central rose. The entrance lobby features margin glazed windows with etched and stained glass in the margins. The gallery and columns are attractively painted in green, red, and white.
