Description

Towyn Independent Chapel, which includes a schoolroom to the right, is a large chapel built in squared, tooled grey-brown rubble stone and topped with a slate roof. It features coped shouldered gables and an apex finial. The chapel has a three-bay end facade, although the left bay is obscured by a schoolroom addition from around 1890. The original design is highlighted by plain angle and dividing pilasters, a two-step frieze, and a cement moulded cornice that stops short of the gable shoulder. The gable itself is plain, featuring a vent roundel and an arched date plaque. The main front has arched windows on two floors, with small-paned windows that include marginal and radiating glazing bars; the centre window is broader, while those to the right are obscured. A porch, also from around 1890, is constructed of rock-faced rubble stone and has an arched doorway on two faces, positioned at the angle to the schoolroom. It features ledged doors and crescent overlights.

The prominent side elevation has three windows, with similar arched windows on the upper level and long cambered-headed windows below. The end wall includes a rendered rear addition from 1909, which has a parapet, a canted 'apse' end, and long arched windows. There is also a low gabled stone addition on the east side, featuring an arched door and an apex roundel.

The schoolroom runs northeast from the main front and is built of rock-faced rubble stone, featuring six long arched windows and a slate gabled roof.

The chapel is situated on a high rubble stone terrace, which is enclosed by iron railings, openwork piers, and double gates.

Inside, the chapel has a painted gallery front on three sides with splayed angles and long rectangular panels, supported by short plain iron posts marked T Thomas, Cardigan. The seating consists of painted grained box pews. The pulpit features a curved panelled front with baluster stairs on each side, and a large organ from 1909, made by A Young & Sons of Manchester, is located behind it. The organ recess is adorned with ornate plasterwork in a depressed arch. The ceiling is boarded and features an ornate centre plaster rose. At the entry end, there is a screen with a traceried window, an etched glass centre oval panel, and coloured glass inserts around the margins.
