Description
The N and E ranges of outbuildings at Nant-y-Dderwen are constructed from whitewashed rubble stone and feature slate roofs. These three attached ranges were not all built at the same time. On the northern side of the yard, there is a cow-shed with a sloping roof, which has its lower pine-end facing the road and the upper side against the pine-end of a much taller barn that has a level ridge. Along the eastern upper side of the yard, there is a cart-shed range that is attached at right angles to the barn, with its roof sloping uphill away from the barn.
The cow-shed includes a loft window in its lower pine end and has a door with a timber lintel towards the left end. To the right, there is a small loft light under the eaves, followed by a window, then a door and another window closely beyond. The door features a brick head, and the rear has one door with a brick head towards the upper end.
The barn, which appears to have been added later, has a high gable with a triangular light and is mostly without openings facing the yard, except for a small door at the center that has stone voussoirs. The rear of the barn features a door with stone voussoirs at the center, a small window just to the left, and a stone lean-to at the left end that covers a large water-wheel. Beyond this, there is a broad door with stone voussoirs and a square loft door above it. There is also one window in the upper pine-end. The water-wheel has a diameter of approximately 4.56 meters (12 feet) and is marked "Ellis Bros, Eagle Foundry, Aberystwyth."
The range along the upper end of the yard has a sloping roofline with eaves that descend towards the barn. To the left, there is a single door with stone voussoirs, followed by five full-height cart-entries with square stone piers between them.
