Description

Capel Bethesda is a building featuring a rock-faced coursed squared stone gable facade, with rubble stone side walls and a slate roof. The pedimental gable is marked by a simplified cornice and a raised border at the eaves. The main facade is divided by raised piers into a broad central bay and narrower side bays. The cornice breaks forward over the piers, which extend upwards to divide the pediment into three sections. In the center of the pediment is an ashlar roundel with a timber quatrefoil louvre inside. Below, the outer divisions each have a long arched window surrounded by painted ashlar with minimal impost blocks and a keystone, along with stone raised sill-courses. The center features an arched triplet in similar surrounds, with the central light being broader and higher, showcasing more elaborate glazing. Below this is a date plaque above two doors, which are recessed in Gothic doorcases. The doorcases are made of painted ashlar with rebated jamb shafts, quoins, and arched heads, with the voussoirs brought to a pointed head. The doors are panelled double cambered-headed with crescent overlights. The sides of the building are two-storey with a five-window arrangement, featuring arched windows above and cambered-headed windows below, all with marginal glazing bars and center mullions, and stone voussoirs to the heads. There is also a small door on the north side.

Inside, there is a deep coved cornice and a wooden deep-panelled ceiling from 1929, arranged in five by three panels and bordered with herring-bone boarding, featuring square iron decorative grilles at the angles. A three-sided gallery with curved angles is supported by nine iron columns with leaf capitals. The gallery front has a lower cornice with raised half-sphere ornament, and the main front consists of long cast-iron pierced panels arranged in a roundel pattern. Raised panelled pilasters are positioned between the panels, with a clock in the center. The gallery pews are raked, while the main pews are arranged in three blocks with two aisles. The great seat has a curved back with matching ironwork. The pulpit features curving balustraded steps on each side, with similar turned balusters flanking a three-sided projecting front adorned with fretwork panels. Behind the pulpit is an elaborate plaster arch supported by console brackets.
