Description

The Church of St David is a Grade II listed building constructed from Pwntan stone with Bath stone dressings, topped with a slate roof featuring terracotta ridges, coped gables, and cross finials. Built in the High Victorian Gothic style, it includes a nave, chancel, south porch, north vestry, and a west bell turret. The nave windows are all 2-light with foiled circle heads and hood moulds. The west end has a central projection for the bell turret and a large battered plinth with two side offsets, along with a long 2-light west window. The bell turret is square, adorned with a string course and narrow 2-light louvered bell openings topped with foiled circles, and features steep gablets leading to a stone pyramid cap with a finial and weather cock. There are two decorative bands around the turret.

On the south side of the nave, there are two windows and a coped gabled porch with a pointed doorway that has a two-chamfer head, with the inner chamfer dying into the side piers. The porch's inner door is pointed with a roll moulded arch. The north side of the nave has three windows and an added lean-to stone outhouse with a brick chimney. The chancel's south side has one shorter window similar to the others, while the north side features a lean-to vestry with a catslide roof and a west door. The east window is a 3-light design with a quatrefoil.

Inside, the nave has a five-bay arched-braced collar-truss roof and whitewashed plaster walls with stone window reveals. The stone chamfered chancel arch is supported by two half-octagonal piers. The west end of the nave has two heavy piers that support the bell turret. There is a three-sided stone pulpit with triangular-headed panels, and an octagonal font on an octagonal base featuring four sexfoil panels. The church contains pine pews, choir stalls, and chancel rails. The chancel has a scissor rafter roof with cusping, and the vestry door on the north side has a hood mould. A heavy stone and marble reredos features tile side panels, two piers with inset marble panels, floral capitals, and three central inlaid marble panels, with the larger centre panel displaying a raised head and the IHS motif. The east window is a magnificent stained glass piece from around 1865 by Lavers and Barraud, featuring rich colors of deep reds, blues, and turquoise, depicting the crucified Christ against a circle of scarlet. Additionally, there is a south chancel 2-light window from around 1904 by Lavers and Westlake.
