Description

The Railed Beynon Family Tomb and David Davies Tomb is a large railed enclosure from the mid-19th century, located in St Michael's Churchyard. It contains the tombs of the Beynon family, surrounded by tall cast iron rails featuring alternate spike and arrowhead finials, with corner and strengthening posts topped with globular finials. A central over-arch on the west side has vertical arrowheads and a crowning globular finial.

Inside the enclosure are four chest tombs. The southernmost tomb is for Mary, the wife of David Beynon, who died in 1823. It has squared rubble sides and a stone slab top. Next to it is a similar memorial for David Beynon of Weegwen, who died on 24 September 1808 at the age of 65, featuring a slate slab with decorative incised work along the edges. The third tomb has dressed stone side panels, carved corner rope-moulding, and a slate top inscribed in memory of Jenkin Beynon of Llaethliw, who died on 12 February 1849 at the age of 72. The final tomb, similar in style and date, has sides with arched panels and a stone slab top, commemorating Mary, the daughter of David Beynon, who died in 1811.

Immediately south of the enclosure is a chest tomb with brick sides and a long slate slab top in memory of David Davies, who died in 1768 at the age of 55. The inscription reads: "The Building of a Meeting House and the rebuilding of this church will perpetuate his memory to future ages," along with Latin and Welsh inscriptions below, and a later inscription for John Davies, the son of David Davies, who died on 17 April 1777. The lettering on this tomb is well-preserved.
