Description

Cae Mawr is a small farmhouse built in the early to mid-19th century, reflecting the Georgian style typical of Ceredigion. The building is constructed of quarried rubble and is whitewashed on the front elevation only. It has a concrete tiled roof that has replaced the original slate, with gable end stacks. The farmhouse is two storeys high and features a three-window range, with three 12-pane sash windows on both the first and ground floors. The central ground floor window has replaced an earlier doorway.

Access to the house is now through a glazed porch on the left-hand gable, although there is an earlier doorway with stone voussoirs located at the right end of the outshut, which extends the full length of the house. The small windows in the gable ends are mainly later additions, but the outshut window on the left gable has a stone voussoir head and may be original.

The interior has a two-room layout, with the main room on the right. This room retains a large fireplace with a timber lintel and a bread oven with a cast iron door. While the ceiling has largely been renewed, there is a small area of earlier joists in the alcove to the right of the fireplace. There is a wide doorway leading to the outshut, which has a boarded door, and a similar door connects the living room to the current kitchen, which has a smaller fireplace and was likely originally a parlour. Both rooms feature slate flagged floors.

The staircase now rises from the outshut, cutting through the thick rear wall, but it is believed that it originally rose from the living room. This makes it difficult to interpret the original layout, as the presence of a central doorway (now a window) might suggest there was a central staircase. The roof trusses are partially visible and feature bolted trusses, indicating a mid-19th century date.
