Description
Howells is a late Georgian three-storey building featuring stucco elevations. It has one window facing Great Darkgate Street, one window on a splayed corner, and three windows on Market Street. The roof is covered with modern corrugated tiles and has bracket eaves along with a brick chimney stack. The small-pane sash windows include one that is blocked on the first floor facing Market Street. The building also has a modern wraparound shop front.
Included for group value is an adjacent broad three-storey, two-window front on Great Darkgate Street, which has Victorian alterations. This section steps up from the Georgian corner block and features a dividing channelled pilaster strip. It has a similar modern roof, wide bracket eaves, and a brick stack. The Victorian section includes splayed bays with moulded cornices and horned sash windows, along with a continuous modern shop front.
