Description
The S.M. Hughes Monument and its railed enclosure are located in Llanwnnen Churchyard. The enclosure is L-shaped and features spearhead iron railings with scroll designs below the top bar and urn-shaped stanchions. On the southern side, to the right, there is a gate topped with a scrolled arched overthrow, although some decorative details are missing. Inside the enclosure, there are three monuments, but only one is of architectural interest. This notable monument is dedicated to Sarah Maria Hughes of Castell-du, who died in 1840. It consists of a large sandstone square sarcophagus with slate inset plaques. Above the sarcophagus is a cornice, followed by a large pyramidal base that supports a big sandstone urn. The other two monuments commemorate Sarah Hughes, who died in 1865, and William Jones of Llwynygroes, who died in 1887.
