Description
20 North Parade is a terraced group of late Georgian buildings featuring three stories and an attic. The front of No 20 is finished in scribed render, while Nos 22 to 26 are constructed from coursed rubble. Nos 20 to 24 have two windows each, while No 26 has three. No 20 showcases a channelled ground floor with end pilaster strips, a cill band, and a plinth. No 22 features brick voussoirs and a bay window. The buildings have slate roofs, with No 20 having higher bracket eaves compared to the slightly lower eaves of No 26. There are rubble chimney stacks present. Pitched roof dormers are found on Nos 20, 24, and 26, with the dormer on No 20 being broad and featuring paired sash windows. Nos 24 and 26 have bargeboards and finials, with No 25 being more ornate. Nos 20 and 22 have three-storey splayed bay windows adorned with dentil cornices and pediments on the first and ground floors of No 20, which also has lugged architraves on the right. Sash windows without glazing bars are present in Nos 20 and 22, while Nos 24 and 26 have small pane sashes, including a tripartite window in No 24. All the buildings retain impressive doorcases; No 20 has a bowed Doric doorcase with a wide cornice and an entablature frieze supported by fluted columns. Nos 22 to 26 feature Ionic doorcases with entablature friezes and fluted columns on No 26. The entrances have panelled reveals and panelled double doors, except for No 24, which has half-glazed doors. Traceried fanlights are present on Nos 20, 24, and 26.
The interiors of Nos 24 and 26 are particularly noteworthy. In No 24, paired Doric columns support the arch leading to the oval stairwell. No 26 features a panelled stairwell arch accessed from an entrance hall that displays plaster ornamentation of fleur de lys and foliage trails on the ceiling, with similar detailing on the underside of the staircase. Both interiors retain reeded doorcases and have been converted for surgery use.
