Description
Barclays Bank is a three-storey building designed in the Italianate Mannerist style. It features ashlar elevations and a channelled granite ground floor, with a plinth and rusticated pilaster strips. The front facing Terrace Road has five windows, while there is one window on the corner and three windows on North Parade. The building has a parapet that is balustraded at the corner, topped with urn finials above a modillion cornice and a bolection moulded entablature.
On the corner, there are giant order Ionic columns in antis with swagged capitals, supporting a balustraded balcony on the first floor above an arched entrance that has convex steps and panelled pediments. The pediments are triangular and segmental on the first floor, featuring keystoned lintels and fluted aprons, with a scrolled pediment above the corner window. The second floor has horned sash windows, while the first floor features cross-frame windows. There are convex balconies flanking the central window on the Terrace Road side.
The ground-floor openings are arched but have modern windows, and there is an overall modern fascia below the cornice that conceals original black lettering. The interior has been modernised.
