Description

Erfyl House is a mid-19th century building, constructed around 1830-1840, located at a slight angle to the main road in front of the Church. Originally marked on the Tithe Map as ‘house in 3 dwellings’, it has since been converted into a single residence.

The house is two storeys high and consists of western and central sections that were likely originally three bays each, along with a smaller eastern section that may have served as a service wing. The exterior features white-painted brickwork, with the western gable showing the shadow of a lower range in red brick and tile hanging above. The eastern range is built of brick with a tin roof, while the rear elevation is constructed of rubble masonry. The roof is covered with asbestos slate and features three chimney stacks made of blue brick.

The western and central houses each have a two-unit plan with a central doorway and a chimney at the western end. Each section has two upper-storey windows beneath the eaves, which are tripartite, made of cast iron, with 24 panes and a central opening light. On the ground floor, the central house has two similar wooden windows flanking its doorway, while the former western house has two modern casement windows, each with 16 panes. The ground floor windows have flat arches with gauged brick heads. The central house features a modern four-panelled, half-lit door with an overlight, and the western house has a substantial added porch with a similar door.

The eastern house, which is at right angles to the main range, has a doorway at the eastern end. It features wooden casement windows under arched heads, along with small casement windows with eight panes each at the rear. A visible butt joint indicates that this eastern section is a later addition.

Erfyl House is included in the listing as it retains the character of a mid-19th century terrace and is part of a group of buildings at the center of the village.
