Description
Pont Llanerfyl is a two-span bridge dating from the early to mid-19th century, possibly built on the site of an earlier structure. It carries the A458 over the River Banwy, located 0.25 kilometers west of the village center. Historical accounts suggest that the bridges in the Llangadfan area were generally not more than 100 years old at the time of Jervoise's observations, who noted that Richard Llwydd described it as ‘newly erected,’ though the exact date is unclear.
The bridge features round arches, curving abutments, and semi-circular cutwaters, all constructed from roughly dressed and coursed local stone in small blocks. The cutwaters are notably larger than the surrounding stones and have stepped stone cappings that rise four courses high. The central pier and cutwaters have been reinforced with concrete or modern stone, creating plinths with pointed ends. The narrow carriageway is flanked by stone parapet walls topped with monolithic stone copings. The voussoirs of the arches are flush with the bridge's face, while the carriageway level is marked by external string jambs on the abutments. The abutments curve without forming quadrants and end in small square buttresses, with a larger buttress likely added later in the northeast corner. These abutments rest on small stone plinths. Stone steps lead from the base of the northwest abutment up to road level.
Pont Llanerfyl is listed as an impressive and unaltered 19th-century bridge with significant townscape value.
