Description

This is a cast iron water standpost and fire hydrant, likely dating to the Victorian era. It is constructed as a moulded column standing on a plain, rounded base secured to the ground by a flat plate. The column is fluted, with six flutes on the east and west sides and a single flute on the north and south sides. Above the column is a disc with rounded sides, topped by a dome with a flat top and a rounded pinnacle. A screw tap is affixed to the disc, and three sockets are positioned at irregular intervals. A spout is located just beneath the disc on the east side, and a large, roughly rectangular iron lacework bucket stand is bolted to the column’s base. The group value of this standpost stems from its rarity and good condition, representative of Victorian civic infrastructure.
