Description

Pentre House is a Tudor-Gothic style house dating from the 18th century, built of rock-faced Cefn stone with ashlar dressings. The house exhibits picturesque massing of gabled wings arranged around an entrance on the north side and principal elevations facing west and south, overlooking gardens. A service wing projects to the northeast. The roof is steeply pitched slate with gable stacks featuring tall patterned shafts.

The north entrance front is asymmetrical, with a diagonal porch framing a panelled door beneath a Tudor arch. The porch is constructed of ashlar and features polygonal turrets, an embattled parapet with pierced quatrefoils and ball finials, and a door set under a Tudor arch. The wings' gables have stacks, and the flat-roofed lobby between the west and east gables has an embattled parapet and fixed lights with margin glazing in each storey. Similar fixed lights are located behind the lobby, in the main block.

The west garden front has advanced gabled bays on both sides and a central bay containing a tall, three-light mullioned and transomed Tudor Gothic window that illuminates the stairwell. The right-hand gable has a stack, and the left side features cross-windows on both levels, with a smaller attic window above. The south garden front presents paired gables that step back to the left and center, with the service wing set further back on the right. The left-hand gable features a canted bay window with a parapet of blind quatrefoils and mullioned and transomed lights. Above this is a three-light mullioned and transomed window and, above that, a fixed light with margin glazing in the attic. The central bay has a three-light mullioned and transomed squared bay window beneath an embattled parapet, topped by a cross-window and a fixed light in the attic. The service wing’s side wall has two-light mullioned windows and a lateral stack to the right. The service wing’s east-facing front is bounded by small garden walls. An advanced gable on the left has a small, fixed attic window under a hood mould, while a brick lean-to shed is attached. To the right is a tripartite window in the lower storey and a two-light upper-storey window.

The house was not inspected in November 1996.
