Description

This is a 17th-century barn, which has undergone later alterations. The external walls were originally timber-framed with a high stone sill. The timber framing of the side walls has been replaced in the 20th century with blockwork, partly clad with corrugated iron, and the original thatched roof has been replaced with corrugated iron. The barn has five bays, featuring full-height cart doors in the central bay. There is a pitching door in a raking roof at the northwest end.

Truss 1 from the southeast end has heavy principal rafters and a tie beam, with the raking struts and high collar removed. Truss 2, positioned against a winnowing floor in the cartway, is similar but retains the raking struts. Mortices for angle braces extending from the wall posts to the tie beam are visible. Truss 3, on the north side of the cartway, incorporates a pair of full crucks, with the tie beam cut through during the insertion of a later floor in the northern part of the barn. The cruck blades are very wide at the elbow and the tie is halved into the south side and secured with four angled pegs. The blades are morticed and pegged at the apex and they include a trench for the ridge. Truss 4 has its tie beam cut, but retains its collar and principal rafters jointed at the apex in a cruck blade fashion.
