Description
The gate piers, gates, and screen at the eastern drive of Maesllwch Castle were built around 1830-1840 by Robert Lugar as part of the castle's rebuilding for Walter Wilkins. The screen features central gate piers flanked by iron railings on a low stone wall, which curves back on the right side to follow the road.
The gate piers are made of sandstone, are octagonal in shape, and stand approximately 3.5 meters high. Each pier has a moulded base and is adorned with cinquefoiled headed recessed panels on all sides, topped with a moulded capital. The low walls are constructed from rock-faced stone with weathered coping stones, supporting cast-iron railings that feature fleur-de-lys terminals. These railings are held up by stanchions with scrolled brackets at the back and rise to meet the central gate piers. The terminal piers are also rock-faced, with chamfered corners, necking, and moulded capitals.
The gates themselves have a double central rail, with dog rails below and an arched design beneath the top rail, also featuring fleur-de-lys terminals.
