Description

Llanbachowey is a house dating from the 17th century, with remodelling from the late 18th century. It has two storeys, attics, and a cellar, along with a later rear section that features a catslide roof. The end walls are made of rubble stone and include chimney stacks with diagonally set paired flues. The front of the house has been rebuilt in rubble stone, with openings under flat voussoir lintels, while the original timber-framed wall, which is partly concealed by the later extension, survives at the rear. This wall is close studded over a high base wall of neat rubble blocks and contains two blocked mullion windows. The house has slate roofs with two roof dormers, a central door with a fanlight, and partial remains of small paned casements. The rear section features a tall rubble stack at one end and external stone steps at the other.

The house retains many original features, including a substantial timber-framed partition wall on the ground floor, formed of diagonally set intersecting timbers, and close-set studs on the upper floor. There is a large winder stair made of stone on the first rise, with solid timber baulks leading up to the attics. The east upper chamber has a stone fireplace with a chamfered timber lintel and a garderobe set in the chimney alcove. Tiny timber and stone windows illuminate the stairs, the garderobe, and the chimney alcoves. The east ground floor room features a large stone open fireplace with a timber lintel, plain squared beams with two rows of joist slots, and remains of an 18th-century stair. The rear section has an iron range in the fireplace with a brick surround and two large salting slabs. The property was derelict at the time of inspection in 1993.
