Description

The gates and gate piers at the former east entrance to Garth are made of monolithic sandstone. Each pier has a square base that rises to an octagonal shaft, which then spreads out to an octagonal crenellated cap topped with a tall octagonal pyramidal finial. This design is referred to as Loudon's Moresque style. The gate features square section rails that rise to pointed arrow terminals with flared tines, and the dog rails have similar terminals. All these elements are braced by curved flats that meet at the center.
