Description
Elmhurst is a house built around 1840 for Miss Clive, who was the sister of Archdeacon Clive and the niece of Robert, Lord Clive. The building is designed in a simple domestic gothic style, constructed from random local sandstone rubble with painted freestone dressings and a slate roof featuring coped gables and both axial and gable end stacks.
The house has two storeys and a three-window range, with a secondary advanced wing to the right. The central gable is prominent and contains the entrance, which is set within an embattled and buttressed shallow porch that features a depressed four-centred arch and paired partly glazed inner doors. Above the entrance is a three-light mullioned and transomed window with small panes. The flanking bays each have tall two-light mullioned and transomed windows with small panes on both floors. The gable end of the advanced right-hand wing has similar window features.
Elmhurst is a fine example of the domestic gothic style that was popular for larger houses in the mid-19th century.
